Lucky days

Sometimes tales of textiles and adventures just arrive on your doorstep…literally. Wal, a neighbour, generously brought around a bag of exquisite and old textiles that he sourced from a recent journey through China for me to see. (Sourced in Lijiang, Yunnan Province )  The textile photographed here is a baby carrier embroidered and appliqued by the Miao people (see more )  and is over 70 years old. Passed down through the generations, this hardwearing utility object combines function, beauty and history. The appliqued work is worked over an indigo dyed batik printed fabric, but it isn’t just used as a blind base. The work complements the batik patterning and provides a rhythmical feast for the eye. A very exciting and unexpected morning.
