Textile Inspirations and Aspirations for 2010
If you’ve noticed by tardiness to my blog entries it’s because I’ve temporarily been seconded to the world of e-learning design. That is designing online courses. It shares some similarities to textile design and processes. It’s a weaving together of different medias, rather than yarns, to create something memorable and meaningful combined with function. I’m learning so much that my head is near exploding point.
As 2009 drew to a close my fly shuttle problems didn’t resolve themselves despite my very best efforts. You can see in this video some of the problems and workarounds I’ve used but to no avail. The fly shuttle should work more like this. Not by half pushing the shuttle through the weft each row. Any suggestions are greatly welcomed.
To soothe the weave issues I’ve had this year I had to order some new yarn to work with from Avril. These super fantastic quality Japanese yarns are so wonderful that I’ve run out of adjectives to describe their beauty. I have a kilo of the natural 2/20 linen which is so soft that it is unsuitable for a wall transparency and will be better in cloth to wear. Also some stainless steel yarn and a luscious cone of white pine yarn. Happy Weaving for 2010!

Pine yarn? Do you mean pine trees? What are they like?
And the best of luck with your fly shuttle!
The US counterpart to Avril is Habu. The yarns are amazing and highly addictive!
Hi – I just watched your fly shuttle video. I only have experience with three types of fly shuttles. Two of them on my AVL loom. The first was the down-ward pull on the AVL which I never mastered – I kept bashing my hand on the beam and finally gave up and ordered a side pull. The third was a verynice simple fly device on a Leclerc Fanny loom. I put it on when I had to weave lots of yardage and it worked very easily.
If you look at the arrangement of the side pull for either the Leclerc or the AVL that the pull is a quick snap from side to side. You might be able to modify your set-up quite easily.
Good luck – they are an amazing time and body saver! Evelyn
I had a fly shuttle on my old loom but never used it, so my comment can be disregarded if inappropriate.
1. Watching videos of people working professionally the pull seems sharper and straight down.
2. Is your shed deep enough for the fly shuttle to always flow well, especially when the bobbin is full.
Just a few thoughts,
Good luck!
Hi
This is blatant self promotion we have 70 (200 plus different colours) Avril and habu yarns in our stuido. The Avril yarn is new this year 2010 and will be up on our wed site in a month or two we hope, as we are buying in bulk we can mix yarns together.
