Weighting Warps

Published by curiousweaver at 8:40 pm under Handweaving

I’ve had a couple of questions about my makeshift method of weighting when using the trapeze for winding the warp (thanks Laritza and Leigh). Here’s a close up photo of the situation. Knotted plastic shopping bag from anywhere containing dumbells. A S hook is added and is secured to the warp chain.

The only problem with this method is its difficulty in sliding the weights down. I have to reset the warp chain each time.See Vavstuga for a video of a trapeze with a very sleek weight sliding. Anyway, refinement will come along after the trapeze is ‘tested’ for usefulness…maybe.

I use empty bleach jars because I can control the weight with the amount of water I put in.

Thank you for this. Having to continaully shift and re-tie is a nuisance, I agree, but I like your s-hooks better than my rings.

I can’t fathom having an actual trapeze set-up at the moment, who knows?

Enjoyed your post on Weighting Warps. In a couple of weeks I’ll be taking a linen weaving workshop with Kati Reeder Meek where she will be showing us how to Warp with a Trapeze.

Thanks for directing me that way. the trapeze looks like it has entered my life just in time. I have just completed 6 silk crackle weave scar/stoles It was the first silk I have used on a warp linger than 5 metres. Wow , did I suffer the lack of tension! I have been a lazy wool warper for far too long. Qool is very forgiving, I have recently realized.

So I am now winding a warp of 17 metres x 60cm. I was just about to start panicking because the silk from Laos that I am using is highly spun and will give me enough flak without the warp being uneven.

I think I will be in the shed constructing a wobbly (my woodwork style) trapeze this week.
These weavings need to get moving the exhibition looms in more ways than one.
