Winter School Warmth

Another ultra fabulous Sturt Winter School at Mittagong!  This week left me invigorated with energy and ideas.  The nine weavers worked diligently, moving from idea to idea or following up in projects. We wound lots of warps with the Kenzo system, tried a myriad of techniques, explored colour and texture in every way.  It really was an outstanding week.  I cheekily suggested that the week would be a mini ‘artist in residence’ approach and it really was for most of the weavers!

Weave Sketches

I learnt so much from everyone there.  One little idea that sticks in my mind is from Sandy – work with colours you don’t normally use to see and evaluate techniques as you explore them. When you start using colours you like you move into design mode and overlook other things. I think this would work when we do weave sketches… An exercise tool in our craft encouraging practicing and honing our hands and minds to work with weave.

Projects and experiments

One participant had a large pre-planned project completed in the week, and several weavers created or wove enough for clothing and interior fabrics. One weaver used the comb reed and no-reed weaving. There was a little bit of this and that for everyone.  I think I’ll bring more pins and tape measures next year!

I’ll leave you with a gallery of creative weaving. Thank you to all the weavers!!
