I think the charcoal by Kathe Kollwitz is hideous...splendid, but hideous. It is not a portrait of "motherly love", it is a portrait of a child being VAMPIRIZED by an androgynous figure, who has its mouth buried in the neck of the child. The adult figure has a beastial look about it, and it is holding the child as if the child were captured prey. Far from being a sentimental picture of "motherly love", it is quite simply one of the most horrifying drawings of vampirism I have ever seen.

Before departing Auckland this last trip, I picked up a fictionalized biography of van Gogh - now I can't remember the title or the author, but it made him out to be a gentle, considerate soul, whereas Gauguin was a nasty lier and cheater. I gave the book to my sister in law after I finished, but the scene where Vincent painted Starry Night was included. Supposedly he painted really quickly, all of his paintings. Do you know if it's true?

Kaz,
Happy New Year!
I've been away from bloging & weaving for a bit and now that both my kids are full time in school I hope to spend more time at my looms!
I have a wonderful weaver friend who has an AVL warping wheel and she has offered to lend me it, to 'test out'. I haven't as yet but I will be soon, & I'm looking forward to it.

Peg: You can use it on ANY loom that has a sectional warp beam! I will be testing it out on my weavebird & AVL.

LOVE weaving toys!
Cheers

Hi
This is blatant self promotion we have 70 (200 plus different colours) Avril and habu yarns in our stuido. The Avril yarn is new this year 2010 and will be up on our wed site in a month or two we hope, as we are buying in bulk we can mix yarns together.

I live in fear of my fly shuttle hitting my laptop as I weave on my AVL (I always take pains to place my computer out of harms way - sometimes difficult because it has to be connected to the Dobby). I have also had my fly shuttle shatter a cup of coffee on the tray next to my loom. I am curious about the cause - I trust Laura that it is caused by a snag, but it has never happened to me when the shuttle is heading from right to left - the divots in my studio floor show that it only happens when the shuttle travels from left to right. If it is a snag it must be combined with the a peculiarity in my placement of the beater when I am looking left or something??? Anyway, shuttle terror aside - your work is stunning - your color sense remarkable.

When I have trouble with the fly shuttle not going all the way across it can be I'm weaving too far before advancing and the shed is not open enough for the shuttle to pass without dragging. OR
I've not wound the bobbin properly and the yarn is not flowing off the end feed bobbin freely enough creating drag and unwanted draw in at the selvage (check if there is an adjustable tension device on your shuttle). OR
I'm not sure the rubber band is doing much - make sure that little wood piece slides freely in the tracks.
Maybe something is off in the angles of the cord tie up or cord length and that would be something for your loom manufacturer hot line - we can't see the tie up on the video. Seems like they would be more than willing to advise you as your struggles are being viewed by a lot of weavers and potential customers.

Fly shuttles are great. I hope you get yours cooking soon!

I have identified so much with many of your comments, issues and humor .
You are an awesome inspiration to weavers all over the world!! Thanks
