Winter Workshops in June

Another very full and weaverly weekend workshop has come and gone in the studio. I’m not sure where to begin but provide the evidence here in photos which never really do the weekend full justice.

It was an interstate affair with Victorians, a Queenslander, a semi local and a local. Weavers are prepared to travel at any time to get some yarn interlacement going.

Firstly, I have to show you a wonderful garment by Renita. It was woven before she came to the workshops and then just ‘whipped’ up. It is based on the squid pattern making full use of the very creative running out of fabric technique. She also included pockets which really are a must have for our clothes.

Some of the weavers created a new textile each day, giving them the opportunity to experiment or use a different colour collection on each work. Others…Like Noelene, continued to make a very decent piece for a garment over the two days. She was also on a wider 50cm wide warp which allows more fabric to be created with the same amount of ‘work’ as the narrower widths.

I am continually inspired and motivated by how every person I see weaving in the Saori way uses such different colour combinations aside from differing texture aesthetics. Sherlaine used strong orange contrasts within a green/green grey/ teal main colour which worked very well.

June did a wonderful colour intensive piece on the first day followed by autumn colours the next. Penny played with a mix of blacks and green on the first day and followed up with a forest mix the second.

Thank you to all the participants for your human energy and creative ideas over the weekend.
