Into confirmed uncertainty

I’m lucky. I’ve had many times in my life that I could pretend that life isn’t so uncertain even though it really is. Lets not take it for granted like I have on so many occasions.

Now with the coming of the coronavirus uncertainty is confirmed. No one knows what is going to happen. No one really knows what to do. I am very frightened for the vulnerable people in our families and in our country. We suspect that help won’t be so available as we have a shortage of doctors on a good day. Hence the shelves empty of toilet paper! Maybe that is all we can do in preparation, useless though it is.

So as nothing can be done, I’ll do what I know. To weave and create in amoungst the worry and washing of the hands!

So I started stitching up a hooded number. A red riding one, that can stop the wolf.

I’ve been working with some cashmere fabric that I wove some time ago. Cashmere is so luxurious and soft. Of course I didn’t have quite enough fabric as usual so you can see the hood section is partially another wool fabric. Running out of fabric is an opportunity not a sad disaster so I was happy with it all.

The pattern is just a straight wrap with a hood attached. I love hoods…hoodies. Even my dressing gown has a hood on it. Although I don’t often wear the hood on, I think it adds to the style and certainly the warmth of a garment near the neck. I’m not really into posing with my creations but it is the only convenient way to show you how it looks on a real person.

Sadly the whole affair isn’t my unique idea. I got the idea from the Japanese book Stylish Wraps. You can wear it as a wrap and hood, or with the hood down, or with arms out ready for take off. It is an easy sew and I just use the Saori method of encasing all seams in a flat felled seam where I need to.

If you’re a sewist there is alot of different types of hoods and I’m going to make one with a more distinctive Medieval drape next time. Cosplay enthusiasts and medieval re-enactment groups have lots of info on the net to get inspiration from.

Back to washing hands and trying to buy toilet paper.
