Walking with other textile techniques and possibilities

While we are waiting for our health and business activity to recover or resolve in some possibility inexplicable way I’ve been exploring many a different offerings in the textile technique world.

Firstly, I’ve become obsessed with garment fitting. I’ve realised that my body is very far from the ‘standard’. Firstly I did a duct tape wrap of my body encouraged by Elizabeth’s version of it. This was much more successful than one I did years ago and was able to see some issues and transfer them to a sloper. Then using Palmer Pletsch method with tissue pattern pieces it seems I need about 20 modifications to a bodice block to come anywhere near my body shape! All these years wearing incorrect fit! Disturbingly I now examine other peoples’ clothes with new eyes and, in my mind, work out what fitting modifications they would need to improve the fit of their clothes. Every one of our bodies is very different and often changing with time. It is remarkable.

My other obsession is with the GUNNHILD crochet primrose throw which was also initiated by a reference to Arne and Carlos Youtube podcasts. Thank you Ali!

And then there is knitted socks. This was a little funny as I broke my ankle some weeks ago on a 10km bushwalk at Cape Hawke! A magnificent place. They’ll be right once I’m mended and can manage with two socks on feet.

Another obsession at this time is European and particularly British historical dress. I’ve always wanted to make a corset, just to see the process, and it looks like now is the time. I’ve been following Izabela Pitcher from Prior Attire on youtube and bought Victorian Dressmaker from her which is a really good practical book on the clothing construction. I guess you’re thinking that we’ll see Saori woven period costumes next!

I suspect everyone has developed new byways of interest in this isolating time. I’ve been winding lots of warps and weaving is always in my frame around me. With a new step I am offering an online Saori weaving option on 4 September for an hour. This session will focus on techniques or ideas for using on the Saori loom in the Saori way. A mini Q & A is also included. Cost is $25.00 for the session. All welcome but you must reside in Australia. Bookings are now available with limited numbers.
