What to love about teaching

Teaching is a special way of being. And we all inhabit that way at many times in our lives. Often teachers are not the highest in their field as such but have a natural way of engaging others to lead to understanding, development, achievement and confidence. I think this is important, and in teaching others the Saori way I try to impart possibilities for them rather than just do this and that. We can learn to do ‘this and that’ but when we leave a teacher it is better if we feel confident and excited about how we will use the knowledge to create. This is what I ideally like to impart to others and if I achieve this even a few times it makes me feel happy!

I have had some visitors to the studio lately and the workings of yarn amongst the sound of beaters with chatter in between is feeling positive and restorative.

Here is a photo of Fran who worked on this piece over some time and the cut down from the loom was wonderful. She had a vision based on her own colourway and ended up with a focus technique that seemed to really work for her. This is the advantage of working closely on the loom, over time, with something you like to do. You’re in your own zone.

In a similar way, Bex came to the studio energised to weave to her own way. You can see the beautiful color mix and a range of introductory techniques and ways of weaving.

I hope all weavers who come to the studio leave with a hope and inspiration for more, or even a brief contented achievement in creativity.

I recently heard a saying that ‘hope is a discipline’ which I rather liked. Rather than being a random hopefully happening out there somewhere thing – it is a discipline within ourselves. This can apply to all sorts of things including the hope that the work will reward you with the devotion you put into it. As weaving can be a lonely practice at times I am lucky that weavers come to share snippets of their lives once again with me and we connect with threads and interlacing on the loom. The Saori way has a special element within it that makes that easy.
