A new weaver…perhaps

A new life…and for us, grandparenthood.

Bree Vera Madigan Wong was born on 25 April at RNS, St Leonards, Sydney. Both mother and daughter (and son in law)  are doing very well. She is a stepsister for lovely Ella.

She has started off being very kind and considerate because 25 April is Anzac day and a public holiday in Australia and we were able to do the miles to get to her with virtually no traffic. I only saw about two cars at Chatswood which is usually in lockdown. I don’t need to tell you that weaving is on the back burner for a few weeks but I’m really hoping she will be interested in EVERYTHING including yarn.

Becoming a granny is certainly one of the most challenging life events thus far for me.  It seems I don’t understand this thing we call life at all. I see an abundance of mummy blogs but I haven’t seen any granny blogs and I think I know why. The feelings are so deep and personal and can’t be glossed, busied and softened with the warm antics of your child.

I learnt to weave and explored weaving throughout my daughters’ young lives and I always felt they provided a motivation and energy toward creating my textile work. Something that is lacking in a home when they have left. Maybe I can influence Bree to learn to weave – I have a little Piccolo loom ready. When do you think I should start? Is two weeks old too early to read weaving books to her? Any ideas beyond Charlie Needs a Cloak?

    Congratulations Kaz and family!
I think you would enjoy ‘Collecting Colour’ by Kylie Dunstan. It’s a beautiful book I picked up in Gunbalanya, West Arnhem Land, about two little girls who go gathering pandanus and natural dyes to weave baskets with the women.

Big congratulations to you and your family Kaz! Having two grand-daughters myself, one of whom just loves “fluff” in all its forms. Now at 8 & 5 years, they love helping me beat the weft (ever so gently) and constantly raid my felting wool tops stash. Like you, I am determined to lead them to a love of colour and yarn in all its permutations.

Just lovely…and so many adventures ahead. I’m sure your calming creative influence will enhance her life no end. Read her “Guess How Much I Love You”….its a lovely story.
