Bush Echos

Just before I went to Japan I managed to get a lovely echo weave on my Toika loom, seen here in the threading stage.  Using a random assortment of previously dyed skeins of 2/20 mercerized cotton in a dense sett, I tried to capture a ‘feel’ for the Australian bush with it subtle greyed and sunburnt hues. In the example here I used a fine green Galway linen weft. Entirely appropriate given the Irish family history many of us share.

This piece came off the loom but I was disappointed in its lack of lustre and vitality. Undeterred I started another piece on the same warp with a brighter peach linen warp but I’m still concerned that it is the warp causing a lack of umph in the weave. Is umph a word?

I’m really surprised – it looks absolutely stunning from here. And yes it is definitely a word, though personally I spell it “oomph”!

Yes, Umph is a word. The weaving is beautiful. I’m not sure what would give it that umph factor you are looking for. Something brighter maybe…..bright sunny gold, or maybe pull that blue out in something a bit toned down. or maybe that umber tone pulled in would make the colored portions pop. Just guessing here.
