To twack. This is probably the most instinctual thing to do in Saori weaving. I just learnt this word from the master weaver Archie Brennan (I’m learning so much from him). A Scottish word meaning to check the quality and feel of a fabric by touch. A great word and one I will repeat repeatedly all over the place from now on.
Last weekend saw another small and wonderful workshop in the studio leaving me very inspired to try new ideas on the loom. Ellen wove with jute, always a delight…and a much underated fibre, in my opinion. Lindy took to lace and waves, whilst Julie delved into the ‘harmonics’ of colour in her weave. Once again every weaver is completely different in approach, colour, texture and favoured technique.
Here is a little video of Lindy doing the random Leno. We’ve found that a little beat with a pick up stick helps it prepare better for the beater to finish the row and creates the splayed out warps in a more attractive way. A great weekend!
