Pulling Warps

The magic of weaving cloth doesn’t have to stop when the warp runs out. This technique is a simple and fun one that allows you to change the original sett of the weaving to make it a lighter and more drapeable cloth and also to make the edges speak more or soften them.

It’s a bit deconstructive and as I was doing it I was thinking that I can’t go too far or all of the warp threads will be removed!

The yarn I used is particularly good for this technique because it had strong yet soft floats at the edges. Just ripe to pull out at least 5 threads on each side of the cowl.  Then I started in on the body of the weave removing warp threads here and there. Not too many!  I also made an extra to do at the edges here and there as I was weaving so I would have some areas at the sides with even longer loops. I did all of this before finishing the fabric in the washing machine. The warp was black cotton and the threads were easy to remove in this case. Quite a cathartic exercise that I would recommend.  Makes for a beautiful cowl fabric.
