Time for superheros

I’ve been catching up on some weaving and ideas lately, but I’ll also admit to being waylaid too, with sewing capes for superheros. Now most of the world thinks this isn’t a priority but I really feel it is. Especially for the two little girls, my grand daughters, I’m making them for!  They’ll need their super hero capes along the way in their lives and I’m going to make myself one too. One I should have had a long time ago.

Over the years I’ve been weaving, and especially with Saori style weaving, I’ve collected so many scraps of material.  I’m working through these at the moment with little ideas.  It has to be little because the small pieces aren’t big enough for much. So I’ve been drawn back into purse making in a small way. Purses with frames suit many handwoven fabrics and these ones are currently in an exhibition at A Little to the Left Gallery in Taree.

Purse frames now come in a ‘modern’ style which I’m yet to experiment with. These frames allow a gusset at each side which isn’t glued or stitched to the purse frame edge. They are fun to make although the frames are a bit hard to source.

Embarrassingly, I’ve also been drawn into rag doll making. Now I must say that I hate dolls.  I’ve never taken to them and find them a bit scary so I’m not sure why I’m making them except that Carolyn from WA piqued an interest in them for me. I made the more traditional one from Jess Brown which I think is better for a younger child.  I have to admit I enjoyed making it but not sure I’ve got what it takes to make any more.  But then it did use some of my handwoven scraps…and it’s sort of cute.
