One of the (many) unexpected inspirations in studio time is the conversations I have with weavers. So many different people from different backgrounds and experiences to mine. I must say that we have the capability of solving or more importantly just thinking about how to solve the problems around us. The relaxed and colour infused environment just seems to let it happen. I feel very encouraged by the intelligence and generosity of the people who visit here. I get lots of book, network and link ideas from them and can image myself in different lives with different needs…both painful and joyful ones.
One of my most favourite books is “Conversation“ – How talk can Change Your Life by Theodore Zeldin. Sometimes you come across a book that just floors you with its sensitivity and beauty and this is one. It’s about making better conversations, even between men and women! As of late I’ve become more awkward and certainly shyer in many situations because of some events of the past few years. I so wish I could be more conversational with everyone and had that gift, which it really is. Life is so short and people are so interesting and usually gracious. But we get damaged and afraid to step out despite the real chance that it will be wonderful. Afraid that it will be awkward, embarrassing or just plain abusive. Conversation is a connection to others and, I think, a sign of civility. I’m a believer but not so good in the doing.
In the studio here, I hope that everyone will enjoy conversation, mixed with the glorious opportunity that handweaving gives us. I think conversation creates a sense of belonging even for a short moment…and that feels so good. This has certainly been the case this week and a special thanks to all who visited and prompted this post.
Warping is the go here at the moment and here you can see Sally designing on the warping board. Winding a warp is the beginning of making cloth and holds the promise of what will follow on the loom. It’s really a metaphorical way of starting a conversation in the most practical way.
Wishing all my customers and every reader here a peaceful and festive holiday season. If you don’t have time to start a conversation for your loom in the busy season check out ones that are underway with a pre-wound warp! Lots of pre-wound warps here for summer weaving.
