I’ve always found the prospect of recyling fibres into yarn fascinating. The emergence of something new for a discard seems so noble! Many years ago I wrote a booklet ‘T-Shirt Yarns‘ (PDF File) based on a workshop by Catherine Mick (Canada) on creating beautiful yarns from stretch fabrics. She was an inspiring woman and I was impressed by such a creative approach to making yarn from discarded T shirts. I just HAD to have a go… My first experiment used the Woolworths pamphlet and this was far too shiny for the purpose. Ordinary traditional newsprint was a bit too weak. I then tried the higher quality newsprint found in various ‘lifestyle’ sections of newspapers. These are usually stand alone booklets with staples. I used the Spectrum section of the Sydney Morning Herald. What an empowering way to deal with the news…spinning it.

I tried this way too, with similar results. I think that the artist featured on that website must have used an electric spinner of some kind as I think they do not force the yarn through a 90 deg from the orifice onto the bobbin. -
Oh, this is encouraging! What an excellent start. I too, had thought that the newspaper needed to be wetted just a little bit. I have yet to give any of it a try however. Is your first yarn fairly stiff?

This is great! I am going to have a go with shredded mail! We usually compost it – we have a wormery and the little beasties love it – but we get so much post they are a bit overwhelmed. Watch this space!
Thanks for posting this Kaz, -
Kaz,
Thanks for sharing info with all of us! I hope to try this myself sometime soon and so am glad that you have forged a path!
Do you have plans for this yarn?
