An invitation
Weaving is like any other artistic practice which needs a practice behind it. Saori weaving really is a practice for the hands, mind and body. The process is the practice.
In Saori weaving we really don’t sample as we would in more conventional approaches to weaving. We just weave in the moment and enjoy what comes of it. But lately I’ve been weaving ‘sketches’ in the Saori way.
These are smaller, more detailed and focused interlacements which help me explore yarn and texture and build a weave sketch book. To each piece that I glue into the book I add notes about the why, when and how. The work isn’t a sample to me but a complete piece allowing me to focus intimately on the weave.
I have loads of design books. I have so many ideas, mostly fleeting and unrequited. Some of my books come with squares, dots, plain paper, thicker paper and more. I mainly use the A5 Leuchtturm1917 journals as these also have numbered pages and a contents at the front to fill in and consequently find things! I buy all of my journals from the friendly Larry Post at Curl Curl, NSW. Yes the book will swell up in size with glued cloth in them…but how great will that be. Of course, you can stitch or create your own journal in any way too.
I would like to encourage you, dear readers, to join me in weaving a Saori sketch when you can and starting to fill a journal of loveliness! I’ll find a way for us to share our journal beauty.
